  Calcu, Malbec 2009

Colchagua Valley

"Forward, with cherry and red licorice notes, followed by a dash of lightly firm, toasty vanilla on the finish. Drink now." (11/11) This estate is doing interesting things with Malbec in Chile. They are in a somewhat cooler microclimate of the Colchagua valley, and make a conscious decision to pick the grapes much earlier, often 3-4 weeks earlier than other folks. As a result the wine is very fresh: bright purple fruits and currants abound on the expressive nose. Flavors are fresh, fresh, fresh, with hucklberry fruit standing out. This is one of the rare tasty Malbecs from the other side of the Andes. (Courtesy Wine Spectator)
